Microwave Repair in Charlotte, NC
Built-in only, and why that matters
Read this part first, because it saves everyone a wasted visit: we service built-in and wall-mounted microwaves, including trim-kit units and microwave drawers. We do not service countertop or over-the-counter microwaves. That is not a scheduling preference, it is our scope, and it is the same reason we do not take on small appliances like blenders, coffee machines and vacuums. If your unit sits on the worktop, this is not a job we can book for you, and we would rather tell you now than at your door.

The three usual faults
For the built-ins, the complaint is nearly always one of three. It runs, the turntable turns, the light is on, and nothing gets hot. That is the high-voltage side: magnetron, high-voltage diode, capacitor or transformer. It is completely dead with no panel and no light. That is a blown line fuse, and a blown line fuse is usually a symptom, most often of a failed door interlock switch that shorted as it failed, so replacing only the fuse means the fuse blows again. Or the door, hinges or latch have worn to where the interlocks no longer make reliably and the unit refuses to run. Beyond that, we check the turntable motor and coupler, the cooling fan, the control board and touch panel, and on over-the-range built-ins, the vent path and damper. Microwave service involves a charged high-voltage capacitor, which is exactly why this is not a DIY repair.
Repair or replace
The economics favor repair on built-ins for the same reason they do on built-in refrigeration: the appliance was sized to an opening and often trimmed into cabinetry, so replacement can pull joinery into the job. A magnetron, a diode, a door switch, a latch assembly or a control board on a unit that is otherwise sound is a sensible repair. We will tell you honestly when it is not: a microwave with cavity or waveguide damage is at the end of its life, and no amount of parts fixes that.
What your technician checks
- Line fuse, and what caused it to blow rather than just the fuse
- All door interlock switches and the latch mechanism
- Magnetron, high-voltage diode, capacitor and transformer
- Capacitor safely discharged before any further work
- Control board and touch panel response
- Turntable motor and coupler, and the cooling fan
- Vent path and damper on over-the-range built-ins
- Cavity and waveguide condition

What fails in a built-in microwave
Not generic troubleshooting. These are the faults that repeat on Charlotte service calls, and what each symptom usually turns out to be.
Runs and lights up but nothing heats
The high-voltage side: magnetron, high-voltage diode, capacitor or transformer. Everything visible works, which is why this is the symptom people assume is unfixable. It is usually a single component.
Completely dead: no display, no light
A blown line fuse. The important part is why: a failed door interlock switch shorting as it dies takes the fuse with it, so a fuse replaced on its own simply blows again. We find the cause before closing it up.
Will not start unless the door is held just so
Worn door interlock switches, a tired latch assembly, or hinge wear letting the door sit slightly out of line. It is a safety chain doing its job on worn parts, and it is a routine repair.
Loud grinding or the turntable will not rotate
Turntable motor or a worn coupler, or debris under the roller ring. Sometimes it is the cooling fan rather than the turntable, and that one matters more because it protects the magnetron.
Touch panel unresponsive or keys registering themselves
Membrane panel failure or a control board fault. Moisture behind the panel on an over-the-range unit is a common contributor, and worth mentioning if your vent has never worked properly.
Over-the-range unit not venting
Blocked or incorrectly set damper, a failed vent fan, or a unit ducted the wrong way for the kitchen. Often an installation issue rather than a failure, and we will say which one it is.
What we do and do not service
Scope: built-in, wall-mounted, trim-kit and drawer microwaves are serviced. Countertop and over-the-counter microwaves are not, and neither are small appliances such as blenders, coffee machines and vacuums.

21 years of appliance repair
Experience you can hear in the first five minutes
Appliance EMT has repaired appliances since 2005, now across 12 states and here in Charlotte. That is thousands of kitchens and laundry rooms, and the pattern recognition that comes with them. A technician who has seen the same evaporator fan ice up a hundred times does not need to guess at the hundred and first.
It is the difference between replacing parts until something works and knowing which part failed before the panel is off. One costs you a morning. The other costs you several, and the price of every part that was not the problem.

Microwave Repair FAQs: Charlotte, NC
Do you repair countertop microwaves?
No. Countertop and over-the-counter microwaves are outside our scope, along with small appliances like blenders, coffee machines and vacuums. Built-in, wall-mounted, trim-kit and drawer microwaves are serviced.
My microwave runs but nothing gets hot. Is it worth fixing?
On a built-in, usually yes. That symptom points at the high-voltage side (magnetron, diode, capacitor or transformer), which is typically a single component on an otherwise sound unit that was fitted to a cabinet opening. Replacing it can mean cabinetry work, which is why repair tends to win.
Can I replace the fuse in a dead microwave myself?
Please do not. A microwave holds a charged high-voltage capacitor that has to be discharged safely before anything is touched. A blown fuse is also a symptom rather than the fault (often a door interlock switch that shorted), so a fuse replaced on its own blows straight away again.
Do you service microwave drawers and trim-kit installations?
Yes, both. They are built-in units and they come with the fitting and alignment considerations that go with that, which is exactly the kind of work this is.
How long does a built-in microwave repair take?
Most are one visit once the part is on hand. Your technician diagnoses the fault, quotes a flat rate before starting, and completed repairs carry 90 days on parts and labor unless otherwise specified.
