Dryer Repair in Charlotte, NC

A dryer that takes three cycles to dry a load is not a weak dryer. It is a restricted vent or a heat fault, and both are fixable.

Dryer Repair in Charlotte, NC

Usually the vent, not the dryer

Two complaints cover most dryer calls: no heat at all, or heat that never finishes the job. The second one is the one people live with for months, and it is usually not the dryer. A long or crushed vent run, a lint-loaded duct, or a flap hood that no longer opens traps moist air in the drum, so the cycle runs, the clothes stay damp, and the machine cooks its own components until a thermal fuse finally opens. That is why a vent check is part of the diagnosis and not an upsell.

How we diagnose it

On arrival we measure the airflow situation first (vent run, duct condition, exterior hood), then move inside. On electric machines that means the heating element and both legs of the 240V supply, since a dryer on one live leg will tumble happily and never heat. On gas machines it is the igniter, flame sensor, gas valve coils and the flame pattern itself. Then the safety and control chain common to both: thermal fuse, high-limit and cycling thermostats, thermistor, door switch, start switch, timer or control board. When the complaint is noise instead of heat, it is drum rollers, the idler pulley, the belt and the rear drum bearing or glides.

Repair or replace

Dryers are the most repair-worthy major appliance in the house. The mechanism is simple, the parts are available, and almost every common failure (element, igniter, coils, thermostats, fuse, rollers, belt, idler, door switch, board) is a straightforward job on a machine that has plenty of life left. Replacement only really enters the conversation when the drum or bearing housing itself is damaged. If we clear a vent and the machine dries properly again, we will tell you that is what it was rather than inventing a part.

What your technician checks

  • Vent run length, condition and exterior hood operation
  • Lint path from the filter housing through the blower

  • Heating element, or igniter, flame sensor and gas valve coils
  • Thermal fuse, high-limit and cycling thermostats, thermistor
  • Door switch, start switch, timer or control board
  • Drum rollers, idler pulley, belt and rear bearing

Why a Charlotte dryer stops drying

Not generic troubleshooting. These are the faults that repeat on Charlotte service calls, and what each symptom usually turns out to be.

Tumbles but produces no heat

On electric, a failed heating element or a lost leg of the 240V supply: a dryer on one leg still turns the drum, which is exactly why this fools people. On gas, the igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coils. A blown thermal fuse causes it too, and a blown fuse is almost always a restricted vent telling on itself.

Runs for hours and clothes are still damp

Airflow, nearly every time. A long or kinked vent, a duct packed with lint, or an exterior flap that no longer opens leaves moist air in the drum with nowhere to go. We check the whole run rather than just the first three feet, because the blockage is usually further out than you can reach.

Will not start, or stops the moment you let go

Door switch, start switch or the control. It is a small, quick repair: worth asking about before replacing a machine that is otherwise sound.

Loud thumping, squealing or grinding

Drum support rollers flat-spotted with age, a dry idler pulley, a worn belt, or the rear drum bearing. These are all wear parts and all replaceable. Left alone, a seized roller will eventually take the belt with it.

Burning smell, or the cabinet is hot to the touch

Stop using it and call. Lint accumulated around the heat source or blower, or a blocked vent holding heat inside the cabinet, is a genuine fire risk. This is the one dryer symptom that should not wait for a convenient appointment.

Shuts off partway through every cycle

A cycling or high-limit thermostat opening early, or a thermistor reading wrong, so the control thinks the load is finished. The part is cheap; the reason it is tripping is usually airflow, and fixing only the part means we would be back.

21 years of appliance repair

Experience you can hear in the first five minutes

Appliance EMT has repaired appliances since 2005, now across 12 states and here in Charlotte. That is thousands of kitchens and laundry rooms, and the pattern recognition that comes with them. A technician who has seen the same evaporator fan ice up a hundred times does not need to guess at the hundred and first.

It is the difference between replacing parts until something works and knowing which part failed before the panel is off. One costs you a morning. The other costs you several, and the price of every part that was not the problem.

Dryer Repair FAQs: Charlotte, NC

My dryer runs but nothing gets dry. What is it?

Most often the vent, not the dryer. A long, crushed or lint-loaded duct (or an exterior hood flap that has stopped opening) leaves humid air trapped in the drum, so the cycle runs without ever finishing. We check the whole vent run as part of the diagnosis, then the heat circuit and thermostats.

Do you repair gas dryers as well as electric?

Yes, both. Gas machines come in for igniters, flame sensors and gas valve coils; electric machines for heating elements and a lost leg of the 240V supply. The tumble-but-no-heat symptom looks identical from the outside and points somewhere completely different.

Is a dryer worth repairing?

More than any other major appliance. The mechanism is simple and nearly every common failure (element, igniter, coils, thermostats, thermal fuse, rollers, belt, idler, door switch, board) is a sensible repair on a machine with plenty of service left. Replacement really only comes up when the drum or its bearing housing is damaged.

My dryer smells like it is burning. Can it wait until the weekend?

No. Unplug it or shut off the gas and call. A burning smell usually means lint has built up around the heat source or blower, or the vent is blocked and holding heat in the cabinet. That is a fire risk, and it gets treated as urgent.

Will you clear the vent while you are here?

Vent service is part of what we do, and we would rather find a blocked duct than replace a thermal fuse and be back in a month. If clearing the vent is what fixes your machine, your technician will tell you that straight instead of writing up a part.
