Garbage Disposal Repair in Charlotte, NC
What the symptom tells you
Disposal calls are short, specific and satisfying. A unit that hums without turning is jammed, and the motor is fine: the jam gets cleared and the overload reset. A unit that is completely dead is a tripped overload, a bad switch, a dead outlet or a failed motor, in that order of likelihood. A unit that leaks tells you where the fault is by where the water appears: the sink flange, the dishwasher inlet, the discharge tube connection, or the housing itself. Only the last one means the disposal is finished.

How we work it
We work it from the top: clear the jam properly from the grinding chamber rather than just spinning the flywheel, check the impellers and the shredder ring for damage, and press the overload reset. Then power and switch, the outlet and, where fitted, the air switch. For leaks we identify the source instead of sealing hopefully: the sink flange and its putty or gasket, the dishwasher inlet connection, the discharge elbow gasket, and the body seam, which is the one that cannot be repaired. We also check the dishwasher inlet plug, because a disposal installed with the plug still in place will stop a dishwasher draining and bring us out for the wrong appliance. While we are under there, the trap and the discharge line get looked at too, since a partial clog downstream causes a disposal to back up and look guilty.
Repair or replace
Jams, switches, outlets, flanges and connections are all repairs. Motor failure and a body-seam leak are not: the housing is sealed and the unit gets replaced, which is a quick job and usually a good moment to talk about whether the horsepower suits how the kitchen actually gets used. One thing worth saying up front: a disposal is the under-sink appliance we service, but small kitchen appliances like blenders, coffee machines and vacuums are outside what we work on. If you are not sure which side of that line your problem falls on, call and describe it and we will tell you before booking a visit.

Disposal symptoms and what they mean
Not generic troubleshooting. These are the faults that repeat on Charlotte service calls, and what each symptom usually turns out to be.
Hums but does not turn
A jam, essentially every time: a bone fragment, a fruit pit, a bottle cap or cutlery wedged between impeller and shredder ring. The motor is fine. We clear it from the chamber, check the ring for damage, and reset the overload.
Completely dead, no sound at all
Tripped overload first, then the wall switch or air switch, then the outlet, then the motor. Three of those four are cheap, so nobody should replace a disposal before they have been ruled out.
Leaking under the sink
Where the water appears is the diagnosis. The sink flange, the dishwasher inlet, or the discharge elbow gasket are all repairs. A leak from the housing seam itself is not: that unit is done, and we will say so rather than sell you a seal.
Backs up into the sink or drains slowly
Often not the disposal. A partial clog in the trap or the line downstream makes a healthy unit look like it has failed. We check the discharge path before condemning the appliance.
Dishwasher suddenly will not drain after a new disposal
The dishwasher inlet plug was left in place during installation. It is a five-minute fix that regularly gets booked as a dishwasher fault, and it is worth mentioning when you call.
Rattling, or grinding much louder than it used to
Something metal still in the chamber, or worn and chipped impellers letting waste bypass the shredder ring. Left alone it becomes the jam that trips the overload for good.

21 years of appliance repair
Experience you can hear in the first five minutes
Appliance EMT has repaired appliances since 2005, now across 12 states and here in Charlotte. That is thousands of kitchens and laundry rooms, and the pattern recognition that comes with them. A technician who has seen the same evaporator fan ice up a hundred times does not need to guess at the hundred and first.
It is the difference between replacing parts until something works and knowing which part failed before the panel is off. One costs you a morning. The other costs you several, and the price of every part that was not the problem.

Garbage Disposal Repair FAQs: Charlotte, NC
My disposal just hums. Is the motor burned out?
Almost certainly not. A hum with no rotation is a jam: the motor is running and the flywheel cannot turn. Clearing the jam properly and resetting the overload fixes the great majority of these, and we check the shredder ring for damage while we are in there.
Can a leaking garbage disposal be repaired?
It depends where it leaks from. The sink flange, the dishwasher inlet and the discharge elbow are all repairable connections. A leak from the housing seam is not, because the body is sealed, and that unit needs replacing. We identify the source before quoting either way.
Will you replace a disposal as well as repair one?
Yes. Replacement is a quick job and it is the right answer for motor failure or a body leak. It is also a sensible moment to check the unit size suits how your kitchen is actually used, rather than defaulting to whatever the builder fitted.
Do you fix small kitchen appliances too?
No. Blenders, coffee machines, vacuums and similar small appliances are outside what we service. Garbage disposals, dishwashers and the major appliances on this site are in scope. Call and describe the unit if you are unsure and we will tell you before you book.
What does a disposal visit cost?
The trip charge is $117 residential and $197 commercial, waived when you go ahead with the repair. Your technician quotes a flat rate for the work before starting, so you approve the real number first.
